IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ALL HORSE OWNERS!
The Animal Health Trust has confirmed an outbreak of Equine Influenza in a group of unvaccinated horses in mid-Cornwall.
Spread occurs by direct contact with infected horses but importantly also via airborne spread without contact. In infected horses the disease causes a raised temperature, coughing and a nasal discharge. The horse cannot be ridden for several weeks while it is recovering. Foals are affected more severely.
Vaccination is protective but immunity begins to wane six months after a booster is given. In view of this and while the present outbreak is in progress, on the advice of the Animal Health Trust we are advising owners of horses that received their last booster more than 6 months ago should now consider having an additional booster.
Owners of unvaccinated horses should consider having them vaccinated to protect them and to limit the spread of the present outbreak.

Horses can be very fearful of vets so it is good to know that there is not going to be that battle or behaviour problems - the horses are comfortable with them.
In the 12 years that I have used EqWest I have found their service to be excellent, and I have the confidence that what they say is right - the fact that they are a specialist equine vet helps a lot.
